Some artists work in clay and stone — and others use cake and frosting. Such is the case with the artists at Montilio’s Baking Co. who have just sculpted a life-size cake replica of Patriots star Rob Gronkowski on behalf of Dunkin’ Donuts.
“It looks just like him,” owner George Montilio said. “Right down to his smile.”
When not starring on the football field, Gronkowski is a pitchman for Dunkin’ Donuts. In his pitchman capacity, he is part of something called the “DD Gronkoff” Facebook sweepstakes. Over the last few weeks, fans were asked to submit their best impression of Gronk’s signature spike move via a picture or video, or a picture of themselves next to the life-size Gronk stand-up poster featured at many Dunkin’ locations to the Dunkin’ Facebook page.
Now the winners have been selected, and their prize is to meet with Gronkowski Tuesday at a special event at the Putnam Club North West Lounge at Gillette Stadium, said Dunkin’ Donuts, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked-goods chain.
The winners will not only get to interact with Gronk during a Q-and-A session, but they will also get to chow down on Dunkin’ Donuts Bakery Sandwiches, the chain said.
As part of the festivities, a life-size replica cake of the Gronk will be unveiled — so if a lucky fan wants to take a bite out of Gronk’s bad ankle, that could be a culinary possibility.
This isn’t the first time Montilio has made a cake of a sports star. His Brockton-based company recently made a cake replica of the new statute of boxer Rocky Marciano.
And, no, the replica cake of Gronkowski was not fashioned of Munchkins and Donuts. According to Montilio, his creation contains enough ingredients for 15 sheet-cakes. A cast-iron frame and bits of Styrofoam were used to help hold things together, and Montilio estimated that 80 hours of work went into the project.
Getting Gronkowski’s haircut just right was one of the biggest challenges, Montilio said; it took one of Monitilio’s team nearly an entire day to capture that.
Maybe some day Gronkowski will be honored with a real statue, just as local sports star Bobby Orr has been. But for the moment, Gronk will have to eat cake.
