Gronk Might Be Heading Back to the Kentucky Derby – But Not as You Think!

Posted by: Gronkowski

Gronkowski is a top contender for the Kentucky Derby.

But slow down, before you get fired up about a do-over of Rob’s spectacular plaid suit, green tie and party glasses from 2015 … we’re actually talking about a racehorse.

Yep, there’s a real-life equine contender named Gronkowski – and just like his namesake, he’s damn fast.

Gronkowski the horse is a favorite in Thursday’s Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes at Kempton Park in London, putting him one step (or hoof) closer to the biggest day in racing on May 5.

The three-year-old colt, who is currently unbeaten in two outings on the all-weather this winter, was named by Kerri Radcliffe, Phoenix Thoroughbred's racing manager and bloodstock agent, who is a huge Pats fan.

"I love the New England Patriots and as Rob Gronkowski is six-five and about the same wide I thought it would be an appropriate name for the horse as he's built much the same,” she told the Racing Post.

And much like his namesake, "Gronkowski is a lovely horse and we are excited about his future,” Radcliffe said of the U.K.-based racehorse. “I think the plan would be to give him one more run here and then head to the U.S., where I'm sure he'll generate plenty of interest with a name like his."

We can think of one Derby regular who’ll sure to bet on him. We’re looking at you, Tom Brady.
