Gronkowski Scores in Win over Chargers

Rarely does Tom Brady get to make an easy pass to his biggest target, Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots tight end usually finds himself being mauled by one or more defenders. But Brady found Gronkowski wide open in the end zone in the second quarter of the Patriots’ 21-13 win over the Chargers.

When asked how he was left so wide open, Gronkowski credited the play design. “I mean there’s a little confusion sometimes,” Gronk said in his postgame press conference. “Half of the time we run the play in practice I’m wide open and the other half I’m covered like by two guys. So it’s a kind of a little play action, a little mix-up. “You just never know what you’re going to get and you’ve just got to react on the play and Tom [Brady] just saw me that I was wide open and hit me with the pass. It was nice. It developed [nicely] overall as a play.”

The play call is designed to set the defense up for failure. Gronkowski ran a “rub” route with fellow tight end Dwayne Allen. As the two crossed paths, each defender came off of the “rub” on Allen, leaving Gronk the open target this time around. “It’s just one of those play calls and Rob was able to be the one that went uncovered and the ball found him,” Allen explained.
