Jimmy Garoppolo Is Traded to the 49ers in Patriots' Surprise QB Shakeup
Posted by: Gronkowski
Farewell Jimmy Garoppolo … we barely got to know you but while our time with you was brief, it was well spent.
On Monday, the Patriots made the shocking announcement that they had traded their TB12 second generation model to the San Francisco 49ers for a second round pick.
As always, ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to break the news of the QB shakeup to Pats Nation, and the immediate responses on his Twitter feed ranged from “Holy s---t” to “oh God no.” One witty follower even said: “My wife left me for the mailman but this news made me forget that.”
While the daring move is a clear and undeniable sign of Bill Belichick’s unwavering faith in 40-year-old Brady, it does spark fear into the hearts of some fans as they imagine what will happen if Brady gets injured after first Jacoby Brissett and now Garoppolo have been traded.
Garoppolo is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2018, according to Spotrac, and New England wasn't likely to pay him market value if he was still sitting on the bench behind Brady.
The 2014 second-round draft pick finished 24-of-33 for 264 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in his 2016 debut against the Arizona Cardinals in the midst of Deflategate. The following week he led the Pats to another victory over the Miami Dolphins, going 18-of-26 for 232 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions before suffering a shoulder injury.
Garoppolo is replacing another former Pats backup, Brian Hoyer, who was released by the Niners – and who NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport predicts will once again be speaking with the Patriots.
While we won't have the pleasure of seeing Jimmy in a Pats uniform anymore, we will always have this epic "Hamilton" parody from Rob Riggle to remember him by.
