Martellus Bennett Reunites With Gronk on Patriots’ Tight End Corp
Posted by: Gronkowski
He’s back! The original MartysaurusRex is returning to Foxboro as the Patriots picked up Martellus Bennett off waivers on Thursday.
After spending a few months in the frozen trundra, Bennett was cut by the Green Bay Packers this week on the designation that he had failed to disclose a physical condition.
The Packers' loss is definitely the Patriots' gain as it marks the revival of one of the most dynamic tight end duos in the NFL.
After saying during the Packers Bye week that he was “pretty sure” he’d retire this season, we’re “pretty sure” Bennett will change his mind if it means catching passes from Tom Brady for a few more seasons. There’s no doubt that he’ll slip right back into the New England offense, hell, he’s even getting his old number 88 jersey back.
The GOAT had high praise for Bennett his first time around in New England, calling the Gronk-Bennett combo “so dynamic.”
“They’re tough match-ups, they’re both 6-foot-6-plus, 270-pounds-plus. They’re hard match-ups for anybody because they’re just very unique players,” Brady said last October, according to Boston.com.
“It’s great because like on the touchdown to Martellus, one of them, they focused all their coverage on Gronk, and then Martellus gets the one-on-one and he gets the ball. Again, that’s what makes a good offense.”
As for Gronk, he’s gotta be happy to be back with his partner-in-crime against defenses having once called their unstoppable team “Ebony and Ivory.”
While Rob quoted Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, Bennett went “Street Fighter” and said their nicknames were Ken and Ryu. “Hadouken!”
The Boston Herald calculated that the Patriots will inherit the balance of Bennett’s three-year, $21 million contract, including an $6.45 million cap hit in 2018 and $6.5 million cap hit in 2019.
It's not known whether Bennett will make the fast turn around to make appearance on the field at Mile High against the Broncos Sunday night, but he'll be a welcome addition if he does with Chris Hogan being out with a shoulder injury.
